My 10 years in acrobatic basketball

My story is not about a specific event I have had with the Dunking Devils but rather describes my 10 year experience in acrobatic dunking. In the beginning we were just a group of friends having fun doing flips and dunks at our local high school. Going to university we did not want to finish with the sport so we organised ourselves as a dunk team.

It was not easy to keep going though. We knew we wanted to get better and perform shows but how to even do that? There was no real coaching literature written on acrobatic basketball, getting shows was really demanding, being paid as little to cover our training costs was impossible. We pretty much paid our whole scholarships to pay the rent for the gym. The odds were agains us but we did not give up our dream. Members came and went and in the end only the ones who really truly believed that one day we will succeed stayed with the team.

For us success was determined by little things. I still remember the joy of being picked up by an old rented rickety van on the way to one of our performances. My team mates were already inside all with smiles on their faces. We were of to perform maybe 100 km away to an event with 200 spectators. Not much but we did not mind. Going on a trip with best friends and begin able to share our skills with an audience. Wow, what a feeling!

The right attitude, a few lucky breaks and a lot of hard work, dedication and always believing that we can make our dreams come true has got us to where we are now. Learning from our past experiences we are now coaching and inspiring other young people enabling them to see the world traveling with the team. That is one of the most meaningful and fulfilling things for me.

The trips are now 10,000 km long, there are thousands of people watching our shows and the rickety old van is often replaced by airline sits high above the ocean. Much has changed since our journey began but traveling in to the distance with a group of friends and later stepping on stage is still the main reason I am glad an proud to be a Dunking Devil.
